Hummingbirds are mean and I don't really like them! I even took the hummingbird feeders down so hopefully they'll go next door and eat at Jayne's house. I'm sure I was younger than 5. I remember pieces of sitting at the kids table in the kitchen and all of my cousins and aunts and uncles were there. I remember vague things like carrot raisin salad...ick! And foreign things like cheesecake and carrot cake which I thought sounded equally disgusting and wouldn't try any of it. Silly me! I remember my aunts and uncles playing dominos, which I never could understand and my Aunt Vonciele would play Yatzee with me. Knowing the family dynamics now, I'm sure there was lots of fighting and bickering but at the time I thought we all loved each other and had a great time.

I don't specifically remember too many Thanksgivings through the rest of my growing up years here in Colorado. I remember a couple of Thanksgivings alone when my mom went down to Farmington and I stayed home because of my job. Not fun.

Fast forward to 1982! I met Ches and we decided sometime around November 20th that we would get married December 19th. Mind you, we'd known each other for 4 months and we were 18, of course we knew what we were doing!! Well, we happily broke the news to his family first on Thanksgiving Day: picture a beautifully set table at Brad and Debbie's house. The table FILLED with all of Ches' Italian Uncles drinking wine and telling "risque" jokes! I specifically remember Uncle Frank...I think he was the only person to say congratulations. The rest of them looked a bit worried. My mom just cried and wondered if we were pregnant. Nope, just impulsive.

I had a horrible Thanksgiving the next year. Took Christopher and went out to Thanksgiving Dinner at a local restaurant. That year sucked. Nothing else to say.

Since then every year has been special and wonderful. 1986 I prepared the Thanksgiving meal. I had just had Casey and was pregnant with Dannon but didn't know it yet. Maybe that's why I cried the whole day. Plus, I thought I'd make an improvement on the traditional Thanksgiving meal and have Turkey Tetrazzini and Strawberry Crepes instead of boring Turkey and Stuffing and Mashed Potatos. Ches' family is so sweet and patient. Gary sweetly went to buy more noodles when I undercooked them, Shannon just smiled and held Casey, Grandma Marion patiently held her tongue and Grandpa Selby just brought a bag of Snickers for us to snack on.

Since then, I've hosted Thanksgiving's where I made everyone eat Pumpkin Soup and, the year I became a vegetarian, we all had some fake turkey stuff and all the side dishes were free of any animal products. Once again, I marvel at the patience of Grandpa Gary!

Memories I hope my girls take from our Thanksgivings are: Aunt Shannon coming over and bringing a box of wine. She didn't drink that much but she couldn't cook and that was her contribution to every holiday. She often said she wanted to build a custom home with no kitchen in it as that would make her feel even less guilty.

I hope they remember all those years that we had to write down what we were thankful for. Even though Ches & I haven't worked with the homeless for over a year now, we still hear what's going on. It just got to be too much. After 5 years we just couldn't handle seeing them waste their lives...true, 2 or 3 success stories not to be dismissed but we'd just had enough.

Lori died last week. Natural Causes. Um...besides the bruises and rumors that "Cowboy" beat her up. Normally 45 year old women don't crawl behind the newpaper building and die of natural causes. Lori was such a cute girl...sweet face...had a HUGE crush on Ches. She would just giggle when he'd talk to her. He'd always tell her she was pretty and would tell her she deserved more. She worked for us for a few weeks and was an awesome worker. We have some pretty crappy work to do and she was great! She'd listen to sermons from Pastor Hooper over and over. I gave her a Bible, CD player and several sermons and she'd bring them to work and just jam out on that or the Christian Station. She wanted a better life as well. But, she couldn't separate herself from the men. She just needed that affirmation from them and the men on the street aren't too nice. Maybe nice enough until they get drunk. There were so many times that she got beat up by men she loved.

Well, so what do you do? Forget about her. There was no obit, no memorial service, she's just gone. And her memory with her group living in the park will pass.

....Just like it did with Carrie. Beat up several times by her boyfriend, Glen. She lived outside as long as I knew her. Had a love for cats and would share her tent with 6 or 7 cats. She was so sweet. Glen made her stand on the corner with a sign. I'd see them and go to the store to get food. She loved fruit so we'd pack up on that. She even came to church with us on Christmas Eve. That was fun. I took her to Walmart once to get her some steel toed boots so she could defend herself when Glen got drunk. She hadn't changed her socks in weeks and it was a sight and smell I'll never forget. Glen did get thrown in jail for one winter. He'd kicked her so hard in the face that it had broken her cheek bones. Once again I couldn't get her to go to a shelter so she spent the winter sleeping alone outside. She would sometimes sneak onto a guy's porch and cover herself with garbage so no one would know she was there. I'd buy her gloves and hand warmers. And bananas. She died a few months ago. Natural causes.

Judy...she didn't pass away. Just living in an institution now after crossing the highway and walking in front of a motorhome. They like to make her out as a heroine. Stories go around how she walked out of the hospital and into the sunset because the doctors wouldn't let her have a beer. The truth is that she remembers nothing and no one can take care of her so she got sent somewhere in Denver. Mental capacity of a 7 year old.

Is there an answer? I just get so mad and frustrated. We gave all we had to help them. Jobs, food, counseling, clothes, rides, birth certificates. And nothing. So, after 5 years we just quit. And their lives keep spiraling.lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711689321318451357noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21302284.post-6883999530208858672007-05-30T05:04:00.000-07:002007-06-03T13:24:03.532-07:00Father's Day AlbumI guess there's something to be said for being a packrat! I've always been so sentimental I can never throw away a card or a letter. The other day when I was preparing for a yardsale, I ran across a box with old Father's Day & Birthday Cards for my husband from my girls. They're especially sweet since my girls are now grown. So, the yard sale is on hold and I'm putting them together for Ches for a Father's Day Gift.

Ches has always been an amazing dad and the girls have always been in love with their daddy. The picture of Ches holding Dannon in the bottom left was on Father's Day in 1988. Serving breakfast every Sunday to all the guys that live outside and the people from the Homeless Shelter. Michele and I met Luke & Rene the 2nd week we were there.. They were very gothic looking: dark black dyed hair, tons of tattoos, tons of piercings. But...they had the cutest blonde hair, blue eyed little boy-Shane, about 18 months old.

We couldn't resist them. Michele couldn't resist Shane and I was so intrigued by this young couple, close to my oldest daughter's age, that were living in the homeless shelter. We sat and talked to them for awhile and they were very open about their lives. We'd been intimidated by their appearance but they were just two sweet, VERY mixed-up kids. Living in the homeless shelter, toting Shane around with all the drunks in the park. They were doing drugs, and doing their best at parenting, the same way they'd been taught. Seems they'd come from a long line of alcohol and drug addicts.

We spent a few more Sunday mornings in the park feeding them, talking with them, encouraging them as they pursued their GEDs, and finally getting them out of the Homeless Shelter and into a room. Step One had been accomplished.

As Luke and Rene decided to grow closer to God and make decisions that they deemed important to their family, they decided to get married. And they wanted to get married on Christmas Eve. So, I took Rene to get a dress, shoes, earrings, the works! Michele helped her get her hair done. (no more gothic look) and after our Christmas Eve Service, 2003, Michele performed their wedding. It was beautiful. Shane was dressed so cute and quite a few people from church attended. This couple had made so many friends. Young-Old. Rich-Poor. Everyone loved Luke, Rene & Shane. I remember Christmas Day they showed up at the park, not to eat breakfast as usual. They wanted to SERVE breakfast. They'd come so far in their relationship, had jobs, home, and now their family was what they'd always wanted. No more gothic look, some of the piercings were removed and they were ready to enter a new life.

They were really faithful in church. WE have a very cool church with LOUD music, live band, lights, they LOVED it! They volunteered in "The Dive" (3rd-5th Grade) and had a blast. Luke was so into the kids and the soundbooth. And, more and more of our congregation fell in love with these two that were trying so hard to make a new life for themselves.

Luke worked hard, or at least worked hard trying to develop a work ethic. I don't think his dad has held a job. I remember going over to his house once to help Rene get some stuff and the house was scary. Dark and Evil....gargoyles, dragons....weird funky stuff all around the house. Anyways, Luke worked for various men in the church and these guys would spend lots of time just teaching him responsibility. BUt he was willing to try. They had another son, Jayden, and Rene truly wanted to be a SAHM. Not very practical, but she wanted the best for Shane and Jayden so they made it work. Had a small apartment and were doing great!

Last summer we started to notice them skipping church a bit, not a big deal...it's not like we have roll call and chastise you when you're gone, especially with 2 young ones, and everytime we'd check on them, things still seemed good. There were struggles, and we didn't deny them, but they'd come so far...September 11th, 2005....they got caught, majorly busted for Meth. Seems they'd been on it for a few days, the police came, the kids were a mess, the house a wreck and the kids went to foster care, Luke and Rene went to jail.

Of course Michele and I got calls to bail them out, of course we didn't....Rene was blaming it all on Luke, Luke was pretty much taking responsibility for his part in it and decided to submit to whatever punishement he'd face, and pull out of it.

The kids went to foster care. Shane was almost 3 and Jayden, almost 1. Luke went to court, got on probation, started working for Ches & I, and Rene ran. She got a new boyfriend, did drugs with Luke's dad (tore Luke to pieces) and never tried to see her kids. I don't know the hold that meth can have over a person...never tried it. But I know that the Rene that wouldn't attempt to see her kids was NOT the same Rene that I saw running through the halls of the church trying to catch Shane as he was running like a wild Banchee!!

Luke has worked so incredibly hard. He now has a job for $12 an hour, went through intensive financial counseling, parenting classes and started to get visitation to the boys. The first day he had the boys for the weekend he brought them to church and was BEAMING!! He is so proud of what he's doing for himself and his boys. He's the most responsible person in, at least a couple of generations, of his family. He's had the boys for the past 3 weekends by himself at his apartment. He takes them fishing, flying kites and on picnics. No sign of Rene. Jayden looks just like Shane did at that age...blonde hair, bright blue eyes, absolutely infectious smile and laugh.

Today I attended Jayden's funeral. A few days ago he died of crib death at the age of 18 months. It took a few days for Luke to find Rene to let her know. Luke's mom came into the funeral late and tweaking. And his dad showed up after it was over drunk off his butt. Rene came. She was so skinny and her hair was dyed jet black, half of her hair shaved. She's gotten so many more tattoos....they cover her arms and neck. But she seems ready to take care of some stuff. She says she's going to turn herself in on Monday so she can start clearing up some of the crap in her life. She actually said it's jail or the psyche ward. She's a mess and it just tears at my heart.

I hope she goes. She and Luke were together at the funeral but he's not strong enough to be with her right now. She's still using and I know he's still tempted. I think he's done it a couple of times with her recently but knows he HAS to stop. He has to do it for Shane. Shane will be caught up in the Foster Care system for life if he can't pull himself together. So pray....pray for Luke to be strong....for his employer to help him keep his job while he's healing...for Shane...to just understand somehow that both of his parents do love him...for Rene to turn herself in on Monday. She's got three days to change her mind or be persuaded not to do it by her new "boyfriend".

I don't know....the Park Ministry is hard. It's so much easier to stay in my sheltered little life and just pass those people in the park. So many of them are, they really are satisfied where they're at and don't really strive to change. I can accept that, or at least I'm learning to accept that...but we keep going back for the few, the VERY FEW, that do need support and want to make a lifestyle change....I guess pray for us, too. Ches and I get pretty drained and are needing to get an umph to keep going.

Carter, Jayden James
Jayden James Carter September 30, 2004 - June 8, 2006 Our precious angel left us on June 8, 2006 to be with his Heavenly Father.Ê Although his life on earth was only for a short time, he touched many with his beautiful smile, infectious laugh and sweet disposition.Ê He will live in our hearts forever. Yeah...we were one of those families that just went to church a few times a year. But this church was different. It seemed huge to me...probably 400 people and I thought the music was wild! Now, we've grown to close to 3000 people and are adding onto our building again. My marriage got saved here, my girls grew close to God here, two of my girls got married here. So much of our life is intertwined with Fellowship. I've worked here for 7 years now. We've been so blessed here and are thankful for what God has done in our lives here.
lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711689321318451357noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21302284.post-1144885452901880242006-04-12T16:35:00.000-07:002006-04-12T16:46:54.146-07:00Sushi & Shelby
Today Shelby and I had a sushi picnic in Sherwood park. She's such an amazing girl! She's so focused on her future and her life and how she wants to serve God. Wow! As we munched on raw salmon (well, she just had avocado rolls) we talked about friends and college and boys (ick!) and life in general. She's always been annointed with a basic wisdom from God. Like, since she was about 3! She's looking forward to interning in Vertigo next year. She's already planned her schedule out to go visit middle schoolers at lunch to just hang out and encourage them. Her passion for middle-schoolers and her patience with them is a miracle in itself!! She is one that actually uses "MySpace" in a positive light as she checks on "her kids" and encourages them and keeps up with what they're doing!

Just had a Shelby Love Spurge I guess!!lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711689321318451357noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21302284.post-1143780925660446242006-03-30T20:45:00.000-08:002006-04-11T19:32:29.696-07:00

Today's quote was a little more inspirational to me...It reminded me that we have accomplished a lot. We go out to the local park every Sunday morning to feed anyone there that's hungry. Last Sunday we had snow! It was so cold and most of the people out there weren't prepared.

We've never seen this guy out there before but he was so cold he didn't even move. So, Ches took him a cup of coffee and gave him his gloves. He just put the gloves on him as this man stood there. This pic just shows the true heart of my husband toward the homeless...

We go out there and just treat them like real people. Don't judge...if we got started on that we could go on forever. We (husband and I with a small group of voluteers from our church) show up with scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy, coffee and cocoa. We usually have around 100.

This has been the most rewarding thing Ches & I have ever done. Here is a pic of a family that we met out in the park last summer. A single mom with the cutest little kids ever! Don't know how she got there but she lived in the Homeless Shelter. She got a job and was working crazy hours as a street flagger-has been doing that for a few months now. When they did get an apartment, the youngest girl ran up to me, "Miss Lisa" (so sweet) "we got a home." Just the innocence in her voice and how she appreciated her new home....anyways....so they've been driving this beat up old pick-up around town and to work and it's a total piece of junk. Always runs down. Sunday at church a guy comes up to me and tells me he has a car that he's fixed up and wants to donate to us....Praise God!!! So, she was surprised and totally blessed with this great little Tracker!

I love my job!lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07711689321318451357noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21302284.post-1140480694734396742006-02-20T16:11:00.000-08:002006-02-20T20:49:09.276-08:00I Got Tagged! You've been tagged!!

What were you doing 10 years ago?
Ten years ago my husband and I owned a frame shop at our local mall.
